How to Become an Air Hostess

Ask a Question
How to Become an Air Hostess

The reality of working as an air hostess is a million miles away from the outdated perceptions of a ‘trolley dolly’ or a ‘waitress in the sky’.

With such strict safety regulations, a dramatic increase in low-cost flights and the tight turn-around times, plus regulations at airports, working as an air hostess, or rather, as cabin crew, is a very demanding job.

While there has been a large amount of negative press about cabin crew thanks to strikes causing travel chaos, the image of cabin crew is still very much that of a glamorous career choice. Many cabin crew may disagree with that though, as the role is fast-paced, relatively low paid and highly competitive.

So why is it considered an appealing option, especially for young men and women? Well, the travel perks are a huge incentive and even if you work for a low-cost airline, rather than a large international carrier, there are still plenty of opportunities to see different places around the world.

Salary Expectations

There are two quite distinct arenas for cabin crew employment opportunities – low-cost airlines and major international carriers. Although the salary expectations are not that different (starting at around £14,000 and rising to around £20,000 for more senior cabin crew) the perks do tend to differ, as do the conditions.

For low-cost airline cabin crew, the flights tend to be short, with a very quick turnaround and fewer opportunities for stops of more than one night. For the international carriers, it is common for cabin crew to have two to three nights ‘off’ in their destination city, with all expenses paid.

It is worth noting that these expenses have been curtailed in recent years, particularly since the recession impacted the travel industry, so hotels are less impressive and per diem (daily allowances) rates are reduced.

Cabin Crew Criteria

For all cabin crew, there is a raft of criteria that must be met prior to any application. Most airlines tend to have direct recruitment policies, with application forms available on their website (usually under the careers section) that must be completed online. Although there are a few recruitment agencies that deal with airlines, this is not a particularly popular route, so applying direct is a better bet.

As a rule, the criteria include minimum height restrictions (usually 5ft 2") and ‘weight in proportion to height’. Although this certainly helps the ‘glamorous’ image of cabin crew, it is also for practical reasons, as the cabins are small, with a number of tasks needed to be completed in a small space.

Applicants must also have at least GCSE level English and maths, with references available from the last five years’ employment. Applicants need to be well presented, with no tattoos or piercings visible, plus be able to swim and tread water.

Training

Most training is done in a group setting, usual at the UK base of the airline. For those applying to work at other UK airports, accommodation is usually provided for the duration of the training. This can be around four weeks, with classroom-based learning, flight simulation and empty test flights.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Career Development

Although many people see working as a cabin crew member as a relatively short-term career while they are young, free and single, there are plenty of opportunities available for career development, perhaps because so many people leave after a couple of years. There are senior crew positions as well as land-based roles, with many cabin crew choosing to work in an office role at the airline once their personal circumstances make the shift patterns and required flexibility of being cabin crew less appealing.

I'm 27 and considering a career change. I have my English and maths GCSEs and wondering what else I would need to be an air hostess? In total I have 5years of working experience but in various sectors, is this ok? Are there any specific qualifications needed? I've always dreamed of travelling and would love to do this
ACareerChange Editor 09/02/2018 at 3:36 pm
The five year's employment is not necessary - it just means that if you've not been in education, you have to be able to show what you were doing/have refences etc.
Jj123 09/02/2018 at 1:45 pm

Any subjects at GCSE will be fine as long as English and Maths are included.
ACareerChange Editor 24/01/2018 at 12:14 pm
Applicants must have at least GCSE level English and maths. You don't need A levels or a university degree. Please read the article above for more details.

Not really, as long as you have the relevant GCSEs as detailed in the above article. Airlines may consider it useful if you have a foreign language or a vocational qualification in travel, tourism, hospitality etc.

You could look at a customer service based apprenticeship, but bear in mind that some employers expect you to remain working for them for some time on completion of the apprenticeship. It might be worth looking at FE college courses such as BTECH or NVQ customer services related qualifications. You could consider part time work whilst studying which will help with any cabin crew application once you're 18.
Luc 19/09/2017 at 10:11 am
Hi I'm sixteen looking to join virgin Atlantic when I turn 18. I'm undecided for where I should do an apprenticeship. I was thinking either as a waitress or someone dealing with customer service at a hotel or something like that. Where would be the best place to gain experience that would look good on my cv.

Hi,my name is Dahianna I am 27 years old I have done a cabin crew course and also have study other travel relating course; Travel Operations, travel&Tourism and First Aid training. my career and dream job is to become an Air cabin crew,at the moment i work as a supervisor for ucl university, i deal with a lot of responsibility, from delegating team work and meeting targets. i would like to know, if with my current experience and knowledge would be fine for me to apply? Or is there any particular course or training that i can do to benefit from to getting my dream job ?
ACareerChange Editor 06/04/2017 at 2:26 pm
We don't offer cabin crew courses here. Most airlines offer training to new employees, so you should contact your chosen airline directly.
mell 06/04/2017 at 2:56 am
hi there, my name is Melissa,i am enquiring about the air hostess course, its something i have always wanted to do,in all honesty i have felt i haven't met the criteria ,what i do have experience in nursing/personal care, palliative care, food preparation, behavioural support, teaching assistant level 1, Mother of 2 children with a most supportive husband!
ACareerChange Editor 23/03/2017 at 2:38 pm
Either 6th form or college would be useful. Here's what Virign says:
"You need to be a minimum of 18 years of age
In order to reach the overhead lockers on board you must have an arm reach of 210cm
You will need to be able to do the brace position which involves having your feet flat on the floor whilst sitting in our jump seat which is 45cm off the floor.
Good customer service experience
Have a minimum of three GCSE or equivalent level passes (it is not necessary to have done a crew related course)
Have no live criminal convictions or cases pending, including drink driving convictions.
We would also suggest taking any opportunity to participate in team activities (either part-time/summer holiday/Saturday jobs etc.) in customer service while you are still in school or college. This could contribute to an all-rounded experience that may be helpful when you eventually apply for a cabin crew role."

In the UK, you need the equivalent of 5 GCSEs including maths and english. Unfortunately we do not have details for Cameroon.
ACareerChange Editor 15/06/2016 at 11:45 am
Check the websites of the various airlines in the UK (or wherever you live). They all show details of the entry requirements and how to apply. The Royal Aeronautical Society has a list of all the UK airlines plus their websites here.

A maximum age cannot be specified as that would against age discrimination laws. If you are healthy and can meet the relevant criteria, give it a go!
Jonny Jaz 20/10/2015 at 7:01 pm
What's the max age you can be to join a cabin crew.
"Need change"!
Cabin crew would be it.
Thanks,
Jon .

The above article should give you the detail you need but let us know if there's something extra you would like to know. ACareerChange Editor 27/11/2014 at 10:41 am
@Abs. Generally maths and english are requirements so you should contact the airlines directly to establish if any of them would accept an alternative.
Abs 26/11/2014 at 1:16 pm
I have recently left my 2nd year at college studying health and social care to focus more on becoming an air hostess, I don't have a gcse in maths however have the equivalent of a level 2 functional skills, is that something they accept? Also I'm looking to start an apprenticeship with either Thomas Cooke, Thomson or first choice, is that also an option that would be accepted considered the right training?
ACareerChange Editor 24/11/2014 at 10:40 am
@gincy. There are protocols in place to ensure this kind of thing does not happen and it is does all airlines have procedures in place to take action.

I'm 14 years old and I'm doing my year 10 GCSEs my childhood dream is to be a airhostess
It always have been my family think that I just fitt then part because of how glamorous and outgoing I am ,I'm so excited to begin the first chapters of my life and live in Dubai and meet new people everyday I'm not very good at maths but I will try my best in everything I took travel and tourism and the usually core lessons I love english and pe so I'm very sporty and always had a ffinimonal figure
ACareerChange Editor 10/10/2014 at 12:25 pm
@anku. At year 10 it is unlikely you will grow much more than another inch or two. You've not mentioned how tall you are but most airlines will expect you to comfortably be able to handle baggage in the overhead lockers. Continue with your studies and keep your options open for now. You may find that there are alternative careers that appeal to you as well by taking a look around this site.
anku 09/10/2014 at 6:44 pm
i want to be a air hostess and that is my childhood dream, also my parents dream as well as mine.to be honest i am not tall enough.i am in year 10 and chose the following subjects :business studies, English literature, geography, and other subjects we have to go and it it compulsory.

ACareerChange Editor 24/09/2014 at 12:29 pm

noah 05/08/2014 at 12:51 am
ever since I was young, I liked looking up top the sky at the plane going pass with the sound of air, I also travel a lot to my country called Tonga . I nearly know everything inside the plane but my favourite part is the people who serve the food to the customers and how they do a little example inside the plane. every time i travel i couldn't wait until its my favourite part, but then one day I question it to myself, what am I gonna be when I grow up, soo that's why air hostess is my answer.

Hi Calvin - it's good you are inspired to try a particular career. Airlines differ on height requirements but on average they don't take anyone over 6'2" in height. Keep your ambition in mind, do all the studying and get any 'customer-based' experience you can - perhaps in a voluntary capacity. Good Luck!

I have two very small symbol tattoos. one on my third finger on my right hand and one on my left wrist. I am trained in tattoo camouflage and am willing to cover them every day. is it still worth applying or will I be rejected straight away because I have them? thanks.

Hi...i m a 21 yEar old girl nd i m 176 tall, i've been longing for being an Air hostess all my life. I even thought that because of my environmental background i don't stand a chance, that being in a cAbin crew team takes only advantaged women nd men. But i realised i was wrong, i used to google a lot regarding"how to become an Air hostess" and quite frankly the searches that i used to do had no use over me. Because they usually tells you that to be able to become one, you should have a CAA licence, which i don't even know how does one turn to have that licence. Anyhu, even if i apply online do i stand a chance that my application could be considered??
I m currently doing my N4 and my course is Human Resource, i was also doing my matric a Year before last nd i got "A" on English first lang, "C" on Maths Literacy.

would it be possible to just hide the whole where my nose pericing is with foundation? becuase i dont want it to grow over, but i want to become an air hostess. You can hardly see the whole anyway though, but i just don't want it to grow over.

@Rashmi You will need C grade or above in maths and english. To give yourself that extra edge above other candidates you could also study a second language.

I have 11 GCSE's ranging from A* - C and I also have A Level grades ranging from A- C, I am a multi-linguist and fit the criteria for being an air hostess. However I do have a visible tattoo on my leg which I can cover up with thick nude tights but will that effect my employment chances even if I can cover it up?

'fuejehdeu' - I think your comment was a bit rude. You should respect what other people want to do as a career.

Anyway, 'kahrypoo' - in the UK you will need 4-5 GCSE's grade A*-C and knowing another language will help you, but it is not required :) I hope this helps, all the best of luck!

Oh and for extra information on Air Hostess entry requirments visit any of these websites:

be an air hostess if you want to but i will recommend you to choose another career than air hostess because I don't think you get paid too much for all the hard work you do in the aircraft. also you will be bored all the time, just helping people. if you like travelling then i will again recommend you to be a pilot than air hostess because at least it is paid well for the hard work you do
